Reduce the Risk of Dementia
CHARLOTTE PENENBERG
studio owner & pilates instructor
Exercise and physical activity, of all varieties, have been proven to reduce the risk of dementia.
An article in the NYT outlined three recent long-term studies on the effects of physical activity and the prevention of dementia, and they found that “lifelong physical activity, in all of its forms, goes a long way toward reducing the risk of dementia, even for people who are classified as high-risk.”
It’s not surprising, but it raises questions about how to best apply these findings to our daily lives. How much physical activity do most people get consistently throughout their lifetimes? And how might Pilates help fight against dementia?
Most Pilates devotees agree that it is a great way to stay as mobile as we can as we age. By keeping our core and joints stable, Joseph Pilates' system brilliantly helps us to hold our alignment and enables us to stay physically active and exercise in all the meaningful ways that help ward off dementia!
